Anchorage Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska is one of the most beautiful cities in the country. Located on the edge of Cook Inlet on the southern side of the state, itā€™s wild, desolate and lovely to look at. It is also the largest and most cosmopolitan city in Alaska.

Often used as the gateway to the ā€˜realā€™ Alaska, Anchorage is both a stopping off point and a base of operations for the military and some well-known companies. The airport is also often used as a refueling stop for many international routes, being in the center of many flight lanes.

Medical centers in Anchorage include Providence Alaska Medical Center, YKHC Area Health Educ Center and Alaska Regional Hospital.

Getting around Anchorage

Anchorage has been Americanized, so has freeways, highways and all the infrastructure you would expect. Flying into Anchorage will see you at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) five miles southwest of the city. It handles most domestic and international carriers.

The Port of Anchorage has a single cruise line, Holland America that stops at the city. Other cruise ships stop at Seward, 127 miles south.

The Alaska Railroad runs from Seward through Anchorage, Denali and Fairbanks to North Pole and carries both freight and passengers.

PeopleMover is the bus service in Anchorage and covers most of the central area.

The Seward Highway is the main road route into Anchorage. Parks Highway takes you to Fairbanks while Glenn Highway takes you to Tok in Canada. Local roads are plentiful and well maintained.

The weather and the scenery are amazing and draw a lot of tourists on their way further north. Itā€™s a lively and interesting city full of a real mix of cultures and people.
